We brought the Summer (Thugamar Féin and Samhradh Linn)

This is a very old song and tune, dating back to Pagan times, and collected in the four provinces of Ireland, with some variation in the words. It is a perennial theme: every May (the first month of the ancient Irish Summer) sees a new generation of nubile young girls burst on the scene as nature renews itself with blossoming hedges and meadows. The young girls bring the summer along with them.

Summer, Summer, blossoms of beauty,
We brought the Summer along with us.
Golden flowers in the meadows blooming,
We brought the Summer along with us.

Graceful girls from valley and mountain,
We brought the Summer along with us.
Flowers in our hair, laughing and dancing,
We brought the Summer along with us.

We'll dress the doll as queen of the may;
We brought the Summer along with us;
Join in our dance, all merry and gay;
We brought the Summer along with us.

Holly and hazel, elder and rowan;
We brought the Summer along with us;
Meadows aflame with wild flowers  growing,
We brought the Summer along with us.

Summer, summer, blossom and beauty;
We brought the Summer along with us;
Summer is ours, who'd take it from us;
We brought the Summer along with us.
